Chairman's letter 2018
A warm welcome to our new season of Lunchtime Recitals
The 2018 recitals open on 12th April when Jubovski are returning to perform another programme of fantastical Eastern European gypsy music (one of our most popular musical extravaganzas). Next we have the new instrument for 2018: the viol (26th July). Misha Vichniakov loves music written before 1672, e.g., Morley’s Two-Part Canzonets for Voices and Instruments, though we shall also stray into Bach including the Bach Double Violin Concerto, played by Liz Cowdrey and Misha (and Misha will be teaching us a Ukrainian song).
The autumn brings us trombone and voices – not to mention a ukulele. First is Ian Sankey (27th September), a young trombonist recently embarked on his professional career. Ian will play us entrancing and haunting portraits of animals of the land and sea (do you remember our Whale Song recital?). In complete contrast, just when we need to escape from shortening days, Catherine Woodward (25th October) will whirl us through the tempestuous repertoire of the dramatic soprano. I am intrigued that she also plays the ukulele – which seems an unlikely combination.
Last of all, there is A SURPRISE …
